Farming Mechanar Chests Solo as a Rogue

August 25, 2007 - a day that will live in infamy for all WoW rogues, lol. As you have heard or found out yourself, this strategy has been nerfed with Patch 2.2, so it is no longer viable as written here.

Rogues have long known one of the secret paths to thousands of WoW gold is through instance chests. These chests almost always drop great loot and sometimes even better loot than bosses in the instance. I’m not going to try to tell you Rogues are the best class to farm gold with (I would say Mages have that distinction), but given the Rogue lockpick ability and the lucrative chests instances contain, it does make them the best class to solo instances with.

The newest and hottest gold-making spot for farming gold in an instance is by far The Mechanar (Wowhead | WowWiki) portion of Tempest Keep. Here there are some chests that drop really good loot and can be farmed to make some really good gold.

So this technique is … tricky? I suppose that’s an understatement. You can expect to die alot while you’re figuring this one out, and even once you’ve mastered it, you will likely die on your last chest. That’s why I recommend going in almost naked - you won’t actually be fighting any mobs, so you might as well save on your repair bills.

What gear you will need, if nothing else, is a low-level weapon (low repair bill) for sapping and a pair of Dark Leather Gloves to increase your lockpicking skill. Also, your lockpicking should be at least 350 to begin with, but you’re a rogue so you knew that already. ;)

So what are the tactics to use to hit all the chests without dieing 5 billion times in the process? Below I’ve embedded a video by a WoW player (I can’t tell if his name is Passion or Funky Junky, lol) who outlines exactly the steps to take to master The Mechanar chests.


Soloing this instance will make you a lot of gold, but as you can see from the video it requires a decent amount of practice to get just right. The best, most awesome thing about this gold farming strategy is that once you get it down and can solo The Mechanar with your eyes closed, you can then begin farming it on the HEROIC setting. By farming the Heroic chests, your gold rate will skyrocket and all those lovely blue items will be yours!

To figure out the best way to sell all the greens and blues I get from the chests in this instance I read Valkor’s Gold-Making Guide. This is the number one top-seller of gold-making guides and for good reason - it’s pretty much the best. It will teach you how to rule the Auction House, where to find all the Outland limited-sell vendors and a whole lot more. It’s highly recommended by me and pretty much everyone who has ever used it.

    I used to do this without Dark Leather gloves and fail on the chests all the time. Then when I finally found someone to make me the gloves…I still fail all the time! The gloves are a waste of time, I wouldn’t bother with them.

    Blizzard didnt fix it and the dark leather gloves actually do help. The gloves are a lowlevel item, not hard to craft and cheap. Its worth it for lower failure rate. Better spend 15 min getting the gloves or wasting time waiting for CD on vanish because picklocking failed.

    this doesnt seem to be a good way to make gold considering 3 of the chests of the 5 will probally be locked 2 of which in the hardest spot make it very hard to get more than 2 of the chests open before your locked out for an hour.

    SO does the chest reset on timer? or you have to manually reset the instance after EACH chest?

    If so, why does the article say “you will likely die on your last chest?” Is it the last chest in the video? or does the chest reset after a timer and you dont have to reset the instance?

    The chests aren’t on timers. You have to right click your portrait outside the instance to reset it after you grab the chest. There is only ever one and it spawns in one of the three spots outlined in the video.

    Because blizz limits how many times you can farm instances/do chest runs like this, you can only do 5 of them per hour (at which you can do another 5 after waiting an hour).

    Awesome trick, my rogue used to be my main but I’ve really gotten into my mage recently. Good to see you can teach an old dog new tricks :D
